Skills Development Program

The Skills Development Program at Harvest House Ministries is a cornerstone of our holistic approach to recovery. It is designed to help residents uncover their talents, build confidence, and gain practical experience that supports long-term independence and employability. By engaging in meaningful work and mentorship, residents develop not only technical skills but also the self-discipline, teamwork, and resilience needed to thrive in the workforce.

Our program includes a wide range of streams:

  • Woodworking & Manufacturing: Residents craft furniture and handmade goods sold to the Ottawa community.
  • Garment Printing & Embroidery: A growing initiative offering creative and technical training.
  • Fundraising & Telephone Sales: Residents develop communication and sales skills while supporting the ministry’s outreach.
  • Kitchen & Meal Prep: Culinary training and food service experience.
  • Data Entry & Filing: Office administration and digital literacy.
  • Pre-Counselling Training: For those interested in peer support and mentorship.
  • Senior Resident on Duty: Leadership roles in daily operations.
  • Building Maintenance: Practical skills in facility upkeep.

These activities are more than résumé builders—they are protective factors against relapse and recidivism. By equipping residents with employable skills and linking them to community resources, the program increases economic participation and reduces long-term instability.

The impact is measurable—graduates of the Skills Development Program are more likely to secure stable housing, maintain sobriety, and reintegrate successfully into society. They become confident, skilled workers who contribute meaningfully to their families, communities, and the broader economy. This program is not just about preparing for a job—it’s about preparing for a life of purpose and stability.
